The Fountain Central Mustangs opened their 2026 season at home against the Southmont Mounties on Friday night. It was a defensive battle throughout the first half, with both teams making it difficult to move the football. Southmont took a 7-0 lead into halftime. The Mustangs came out strong to begin the second half, forcing the Mounties to punt on their opening possession. A good punt return by senior Asher Davis gave Fountain Central excellent field position. A few plays later, freshman quarterback Drew Foxworthy broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run, cutting Southmont's lead to 7-6. Fountain Central struck again in the fourth quarter with a trick play. The Mustangs executed a double pass, with Foxworthy getting the ball to Davis, who then found a wide-open Ryan Mitchell in the end zone for a touchdown. The score gave Fountain Central a 12-7 lead. The Mustangs held onto the lead until the closing seconds. Southmont put together a late drive and scored a touchdown with just five seconds remaining to escape with a 14-12 victory. Fountain Central falls to 0-1 on the season and will travel to Crawfordsville on Friday, August 28.
